1. A meme is a belief, though, idea or pattern of behaviour that spreads throughout a culture. Memes are pervasive thoughts that replicate.
2. The internet has become a good ground for memes because it provides a fundamental and simple base for spread to occur. All have access to the internet making memes a universal thing. Advertisers have taken advantage of memes and used them because they are commonly known in a young demographic. This allows for clear understanding of the advert and provides a method of popularization, they can be showed and shared with others.
3. The life cycle of a meme:
The Rise: Original clever/witty joke is created.
Meme expands and is altered with comparative subject matter.
The meme is then rephrased and altered among people.
The Decline: The decline is initiated by the mass spread of a meme in which they are mass produced by people. The jokes then become repeated, making them old and unamusing. The final stage of the decline is that the meme becomes ironic, a joke of itself.
The Fall: The original joke becomes so altered it’s lost, leaving new comers without a “map”. The meme is then rehashed by the new comers, exerting a few last jokes. The meme then becomes mixed with other memes as an attempt to regain status. The final end of the meme occurs when it’s mentioned on a large source like television.
4. Three memes I’m familiarized with would be Annoying Facebook Girl, Unhelpful High School Teacher and Planking. All three had a significant uprise. Planking reached peak in mid 2011 due to police caution. The Annoying Facebook Girl peaked just before 2012 began. Finally the Unhelpful School Teacher meme peaked in September 2011. Planking took a drastic decrease before 2012 and is normally now considered “annoying” or “dumb”. The Annoying Facebook Girl has become less popular gradually but is still at a mid level creating the belief it’s processing its decline phase. The Unhelpful School Teacher appears to be still rising so I would assume it’s about mid rise phase as it becomes more popularized.
5. Advice animals are memes including a photo of an animal that are captioned to suit a certain archetype. Advice Animals are deprived from the original Advice Dog first appearing on Mushroom Kingdom forums.
6. Currently the Oscars are the highest trending search on Google.
